Understanding Learning Disabilities

Learning Disabilities (LD) are frequently a "hidden handicap."  The effort required to process information causes the LD person to respond differently from others in daily living situations.  Early diagnosis, appropriate intervention and support can make all the difference to an LD individual.  Individuals with a learning disability may demonstrate one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Difficulty with reading, writing, speech, & mathematics.
  • Difficulty with perception of time and space.
  • Problems with concentration and attention.
  • Impulsive behavior, difficulty with
    short-term memory.
  • Socialization problems.

  • Difficulty with fine motor coordination.
  • Low self-esteem.
  • Difficulty with organization.
