Understanding Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are frequently a "hidden disability"; the effort required to process information causes the individual to respond differently in daily living situations. Individuals with learning disabilities have average to above average intelligence. But they may have difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

  • Reading, writing, speech & math
  • Perception of time and space
  • Concentration and attention
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Short-term memory
  • Socialization
  • Fine motor coordination
  • Self-esteem
  • Organization

A learning disability is a lifelong issue; however, with early diagnosis, appropriate intervention and support, the individual can succeed in school and life.
